In January 2020, our team at Spiro Lyon Glass began the construction of a new hot glass furnace. We purchased the plans from John Chiles at Hub Consolidated. When the many mold forms arrived, things felt a bit daunting. But actually, once we started the process is when things were actually daunting! The master building skills of Dylan Balderson were about to be put to the test. We were mixing several types of high fire cement (which are an entirely different material than regular cement) and casting them into wooden mold forms. In addition to cement mixing, there was brick laying, metal cutting and welding. The process was 24/7 for 5 weeks straight. We are so grateful to our community that showed up and supported us through the larger castings. Thank you to TJ Ossola, Tom Lean, Wyatt Jager, and Matthew Eames for working hard and getting dirty in return for gratitude, pizza and beer. The furnace is complete and humming like a Lamborghini!
